The world we live in has a lot of beauty in it. Its diversity is the main reason for that beauty. Similarly, there is a vividity even in the professions that we engage in. However, it is up to you to decide on the profession that you like. Yet, you must consider the pros and cons of each and every career opportunity. Your preference also matters. Somehow, the ultimate outcome must be choosing the right profession that suits you the most. In this article, our focus is on how to be an ironworker. Ironwork is a field that would hardly die. The entire world needs ironworkers until its end. So, this would be a good choice for you. But let us look into this much more deeply.

Are Ironworkers in demand?

If you want to be an ironworker, this must be one of your major concerns. Yes, ironworkers are in demand. You would understand this easily if you consider what ironworkers are for. Basically, ironworkers are the ones who work with the creation, development, and modification of iron structures. Of course, there are plenty of iron structures that we use daily. We see bridges, buildings, and many more around us. Such tasks are the tasks that belong to ironworkers. Hence, there is no doubt, ironworkers’ demand would not easily fade away.

But let us move toward a technical discussion. According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a 5 percent growth in this profession from 2019 to 2029. The growth of all the occupations is 4 percent as a whole. But as you see, this is 5 percent. So, it is a little higher than the growth of the average demand as well. Because of that, you do not have to worry about the demand for ironworkers in the near future.

The total existence of this profession relies on the field of construction. As long as there are plenty of constructions happening in the world, you do not have to worry about your job. In fact, there will be more and more constructions in the time to come. That is pretty obvious. So, you do not have to worry about that. Anyway, in terms of the number of job openings for ironworkers within a year, the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics tells that it is about 10600.

Anyway, the best opportunities are for certified and skillful ironworkers. So, you should know how to be an ironworker in the most successful manner. That is what we are going to tell.

What do Ironworkers do?

Of course, if you want to know how to be an ironworker, you would surely have to know what you have to do after being one. In the main, you do have to know to read blueprints and sketches as well as follow them. Most probably, you would know what a blueprint is. But by any chance, if you do not know what a blueprint is, we will tell you. It is sort of a plan of what you have to do or rather a technical drawing. So, you have to know to properly understand the instructions to perform your task in the right way.

Indeed, you have to work on massive construction projects sometimes. Therefore, you need to know to unload and stack iron and steel. In other words, you have to put them into a state that they can be lifted. Humans cannot lift most of such parts. There would be cranes. And yes, it is also your duty to signal the crane operators.

Needless to say, you definitely have to carry out your most basic tasks as an ironworker. They include cutting, bending, and welding iron and steel as well as utilizing tools and equipment for such tasks.

In general, there are many occasions that ironworkers have a key role in. Ironworkers specifically become the main roles when it comes to work such as constructing buildings, bridges, roads, and other such structures and edifices. Hence, you would have understood that there is possibly a wide range in the profession of an ironworker.

Work Schedules of an Ironworker

Of course, before knowing how to be an ironworker, it is important to know the work schedule of an ironworker. In fact, you have to know whether it is a tiresome profession or not. You would have to know whether it is hard to remain an ironworker or not.

If you choose to be an ironworker, indeed you have to work full time. Sometimes, your worksites may be at distant places. Then, you would have to travel there. That would be a little trouble for you if you are reluctant to do so. But you have to accept such situations if you choose to be an ironworker. You have to adapt to the new way of living if ironworking is your career choice.

And you cannot allow the sun or rain to stop you. The weather conditions sure do matter. But the fluctuations in the weather conditions and adverse climatic conditions must be usual. You just can’t stay away from the field saying that it is too hot or cold. In fact, you have to get into work. Let us be honest. Ironworking is a hard profession.

Nevertheless, you have to act accordingly and stop work or get into another task when the weather is not quite right. As for structural ironworkers, they cannot work at heights in wet or windy conditions. They may slip, make a fall, and cause some serious damage. Precipitation would limit reinforcing ironworkers as well.

Steps to be an Ironworker

We talked a lot about the profession that you are interested in. Now, it is time to get to know how to be an ironworker step by step.

  1. Get a high school diploma or an equivalent
  2. Follow a course program
  3. Complete an apprenticeship
  4. Be a journey-level worker
  5. Get the certifications and registrations
  6. Advance to higher positions

These simple six steps would guide you to become a successful ironworker. We are pretty sure that they would not just guide you to be one. They would also help you achieve much higher goals and finish your career life as a brilliant professional. Of course, this is the perfect and best pathway. Let us now understand them at length.

1. Get a high school diploma or an equivalent

The first most important step in becoming an ironworker is getting a high school diploma or an equivalent. In fact, having a high school diploma is pretty important for almost all occupations. So, this is not something that is very specific to this profession. However, do not take this for granted. As a matter of fact, every one of you would have graduated from high school. There is no doubt. Yet, getting to know the importance of having a high school diploma is indeed important.

Basically, you need to have the most fundamental knowledge of certain areas prior to specializing in the field. You must possess reading, writing, and understanding skills. As we told you, understanding blueprints is one of the main parts of your profession. So, this is where your foundation for that is laid.

And most importantly, you must also have maths skills. We do not say that you need to know mathematics like a math prodigy. Besides, having basic knowledge is necessarily important. In fact, you would have to measure certain elements. You would have to estimate how much material is needed and so on. So, you should have sufficient knowledge of mathematics. A high school diploma ensures that you have the necessary knowledge that you would need.

All the same, good decision-making is another important aspect. Having a high school diploma proves that you are good at logical thinking and decision-making. Thus, it would be a qualification for you to tackle your tasks as an ironworker.

By now, you would have known how important it is to have a high school diploma to be an ironworker.

2. Follow a course program

This is not mandatory. But following a course program is vital in terms of excelling in the profession. And this is something through which you can gain some specific knowledge that might be pretty important for ironworking.

So, what sort of courses should you follow? Well, basically, it would be important for you if you follow a course in math. As you would know by now, a major portion of ironworking is related to mathematics. Hence, in most parts of ironworking, you would have to utilize your math knowledge. Of course, designing is not part of yours when it comes to big projects. There are engineers for that. Yet, it is important for you to have a bit of knowledge. It would ease your work as well as help you do some work on your own. Also, you can find out certain easy ways of doing certain things in the field. That would indeed become convenient for you.

And vocational training in areas such as blueprint reading and welding would also be pretty important. Thus, you can even follow a course on blueprint reading. Getting the information out of the plan is the most important in the profession of ironworking. If you do not get the information right, your entire work would go wrong. So, you just cannot ignore reading blueprints. That is vitally important. And because of that, following a course in blueprint reading would be immensely beneficial for you.

And of course, a course in welding is also important. Welding is one most usual parts of your job. If you cannot weld, you just cannot even call yourself an ironworker.

3. Complete an apprenticeship

This is how you should proceed further if you want to be an ironworker. You must complete an apprenticeship. What exactly is an apprenticeship? It is like being trained under the guidance of an experienced professional. Of course, during the course program you follow, you get to know many things about the profession of ironworking. You get sufficient knowledge. In fact, you might have a profound knowledge of all the theoretical facts. But what you lack is the training that you need to have on the field. You would now know to handle and tackle the work practically. But when you work as an apprentice, you get that knowledge.

In the main, you would be able to learn both reinforcing and structural ironworking during the apprenticeship. Generally, an apprentice needs to have at least 144 hours of technical instruction as well as 2000 hours of paid training. Yes, that is one fascinating piece of information about being an apprenticeship. You get pay while you learn and train yourself. So, you would not have to worry about your income during the apprenticeship.

Anyway, you cannot work alone during your apprenticeship. You must always work under the supervision of a senior. If you try to work on your own, of course, it is an offense. You just cannot make money on your own. In fact, you have to be happy with what you get as an apprentice. It is because this is not a stage in which you can work without direct supervision. At this level, you are still learning. So, it is possible for you to make some mistakes. An ironworker making a mistake is not a simple thing. That is why you cannot work on your own.

4. Be a journey-level worker

And finally, you can now call yourself an ironworker. With the completion of the apprenticeship, you automatically become a journey-level ironworker or simply a professional ironworker. Now, nobody can complain that you have insufficient knowledge or inadequate skills. You must now have almost all the skills that you need to be an ironworker. And of course, if you follow our steps to be an ironworker, you would become a successful one someday. Then, you must certainly possess the knowledge and the skills.

In fact, you must now know how to use the necessary tools and equipment in the right manner to perform your tasks. You must know how to handle rebar including measuring and cutting them. Also, you must know how to construct metal frameworks. Metal frameworks play a key role in this business. Hence, having proficient skills in constructing them is indeed a major necessity. Needless to say, if you must be able to read and understand blueprints with no effort. It must be a piece of cake once you become a journey-level ironworker.

All the same, do not reach satiety thinking that there is no more. Having professional skills is not the only thing. You must know to deal with people. In fact, it is only if you have the right soft skills that you would be able to keep growing in the profession. So, while you work, try to develop your communication skills. Build up your interpersonal relationship skills as well as your leadership skills. That may help you keep growing in the profession.

5. Get the certifications and registrations

Yes, this is another important aspect of your profession. You simply have to make yourself a very well-recognized ironworker. Recognition is something that is totally different from talents and skills. But if you do not have the certifications, you would be able to do nothing with your skills as an ironworker. So, if you are reading this article on how to be an ironworker, make sure that you get the certifications and registration if you really want to be one.

What sort of certifications do you need? Of course, it is better if you could have certifications in crane signaling, welding, and rigging. They are pretty much important for your profession as an ironworker. Maybe you have the necessary skills to handle the situations even if you do not have the skills. But still, other people would not know that. A company that is willing to recruit you would not know that. But if you have valid certifications, there would be no such problem at all.

And we must also consider how you must get these. When it comes to welding, the American Welding Society offers you certifications in welding. And if you want certifications in rigging, you can get them from the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators or the National Center for Construction Education and Research. Through these institutions, you can get the necessary certifications. So, you can confidently call yourself a professional and certified ironworker. Then, you have both the paper qualifications as well as training. You are in a state where you can challenge anybody with your subject knowledge. And that would of course make you a significant person among every other person.

6. Advance to higher positions

The last stage on how to be an ironworker is advancing to higher positions. No doubt, you are already an ironworker. But life needs a target. Why should you stop being an ironworker when life serves you much more beyond that. There are many higher positions that you can advance toward if you want to do big things. Anyway, it is not fairly easy. You just cannot shift from the position of an ironworker to an executive level. It needs sacrifices and courage.

What sort of higher positions are there for you? Well, you can become a supervisor or a manager. Becoming a supervisor or a manager would make you get a better salary as well as a better dignity. You do not have to study the field anymore as you have the perfect knowledge and understanding about that. So, all you have to do is to master your leadership skills when you have got enough and more experience as an ironworker.

It is mainly about being experienced. Maturity is not something that you gain out of nothing. You can get maturity only over the course of time. When you keep growing as a professional ironworker, you would naturally get that maturity. In fact, a mature ironworker can handle the business very well. Hence, over time, you can advance to a position like a manager or a supervisor.

But it is important that you develop your leadership and management skills while you keep working. You cannot learn such things from anywhere. Of course, you have to develop your skills. Then, advancing to higher positions would be pretty easy.

How much do Ironworkers make?

No matter how much we tell you on how to be an ironworker, you would be more interested in knowing how much they earn. We will tell you that as well.

As of May 2019, the median annual wage of a reinforcing iron and rebar worker was $49100 according to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The highest 10 percent of the workers earned more than $89790 whereas the lowest 10 percent earned less than $32930.

When it comes to structural iron and steelworkers, their median annual wage was $55040 as of May 2019. The highest 10 percent earned more than $95650. And the lowest 10 percent earned less than $32790.

As you would like to know how to be an ironworker, you would also like to know the pay of an apprentice. In fact, it is approximately half the salary a journey-level worker would get. So, naturally, your salary doubles once you complete your apprenticeship. But even during the apprenticeship, your pay would increase by a little amount gradually when you start indulging in the profession.

So, you just do not have to worry about the income of an ironworker. You would also have understood for yourself that the income of an ironworker is considered satisfactory. And there is a pretty good reputation for the profession of an ironworker as well. Hence, as ironworking is a profession that gives you both a good reputation as well as an income, this is indeed a good choice.

How long does it take to be an Ironworker?

Of course, this is another important question. You must know how long it takes to be an ironworker. It takes about four years.

We have not considered the time it takes to get a high school diploma. That is something that has to happen during the initial stage. After that, it would take several months for you to complete a course program if you intend to follow one. An apprenticeship program usually takes around 3 to 4 years. Following an apprenticeship program is of course mandatory if you want to be an ironworker. So, that is all it takes. You can finish off everything in 4 years’ time.

All the things that you want to do after becoming an ironworker come after that period of time. To advance to higher positions, you need to get experience. And indeed that is a matter of years. It is not a continuous course of action. But anyway, you can go to very good positions if you have the courage, determination, and the ability to keep improving and developing. Then, you can surely end up being a manager or supervisor eventually.

Important Qualities that you need to be an Ironworker

Any profession has a lot more in it than it seems. Ironworking is not just a mere profession. It has a lot more in it. You need to have a lot of important qualities to grow as an ironworker. The U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists out some of them.

  1. Ability to work at heights
  2. Balance
  3. Critical thinking
  4. Depth perception
  5. Hand-eye coordination
  6. Physical stamina
  7. Physical strength

Of course, there are lots of them. You need to be having these qualities to pave your path toward success. That is certain. But let us consider each of them at length. We hope that it will be important for you.

1. Ability to work at heights

This is a very important quality that you need to have. You must be able to work at heights. Ironworking is a career that has a lot to do at heights. If you do not have the ability, you cannot engage in this profession. It is as simple as that.

If you have acrophobia, do not even think of becoming an ironworker. Stop reading this article any further. It would be a waste of time. Indeed it is a waste of time if you have read the complete thing up to now if you have acrophobia. You cannot end up getting vertigo at a height. That is the worst thing you would expect to happen. And that may well be the last thing that would happen in all your lifetime.

Just think that you are engaged in the process of constructing a skyscraper. It would be about 50 stories high. What would happen if you are afraid of heights? Even if you are not afraid, you might not have the capability. Sometimes, you just cannot do it although you strongly need to. Then also, you may have to say goodbye to your life and your beloved ones to make an exit from your life with a huge thud. You may fall off and that would become the end of an ironworker. So, it is better to be cautious of your conditions. Do not choose this profession if you do not have the ability to work at heights.

We think that this will be very helpful to you in understanding how to work at heights. We are sure that this can eliminate the feat within you. Of course, that is the most important thing of all. You need to eliminate your fear. Afterward, it would be pretty easy for you to work at heights.

2. Balance

This is another important physical quality. You must have physical balance. It means that there is good coordination in your body. If you have this proper coordination, you can easily survive as an ironworker. But if you fail to have this, it would bring you disastrous situations for sure. Balance as an ironworker is as important as having supreme balance in your life in all aspects.

Why is it this important? Well, it is important because you have to walk on narrow beams when you have to engage in ironworking. If you slip, it is again exactly the same situation. You may fall. And then you may end up in a terribly devastating manner.

So, it is pretty important that you maintain your delicate balance on narrow beams up ahead. And of course, balance is the key. Balance can make you succeed or fail. Failing to have balance means failing to perform your tasks.

Consider this a foremost concern. Do not think that this is a minor issue. All the same, relate it to your professional career. Have an elegant balance in your professional career as well. That would help you manage your life pretty effectively.

3. Critical thinking

Here we come to another most important key aspect. Critical thinking is a vital factor for the profession of ironworking. You just cannot do something for no reason and be happy. Whatever you do demands a lot of serious reasoning. With right and effective reasoning, you can arrive at correct decisions. Correct decisions can be game-changers in your profession. Bad decisions also can be. But they treat you the opposite way.

What you must do in the first place is understand the problem. Once you understand the problem, then it would become pretty easy for you to go ahead with your work. Yes, as it literally says, you have to understand the problem. Getting to know the problem is just not sufficient. Always, try to think from different perspectives and understand the actual situation and the problem.

Then, you would have to evaluate the potential risks of the problem. When you get to know that there is a construction or some sort of such task, you have to do a bit of analysis on an average level to find its consequences. That would be important in determining the steps to carry out your tasks. And of course, you would have to figure out the most effective and subtle solutions and procedures. That is where you need critical thinking the most. You may have to logically and critically figure out the consequences of each alternative that you have in order to accomplish the task following the optimum procedure.

In this regard, we think that this book would be an excellent choice. Also, this helps in developing step-by-step processes of coming up with fresh and valuable ideas, as well as alternate options in order to solve problems.

The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools distills Richard Paul and Linda Elder’s revolutionary work, focusing on how to deconstruct thinking through reasoning parts and how to measure the quality of our thinking. As ironworkers need to have critical thinking skills, we thought of suggesting you read this book.

4. Depth perception

Depth perception is another key feature that you must consider in advance. First, let us get to know what depth perception is. Depth perception is the ability to see something in three dimensions. The ability to measure the distance towards a specific object is also part of depth perception. This is not something that matters only to ironworkers. Everyone in the world must possess this ability. Nonetheless, what we try to focus on is that ironworkers need to have this more than ordinary people because of the work environment of an ironworker.

You might have a problem with why ironworkers most importantly need to have depth perception more than other professionals. It is because they have to signal crane operators. Crane operators move beams and bundles of rebar. Hence, if the ironworkers fail to give the correct signals to the crane operators, it would turn out to be a mess. That is the reason for depth perception to be this important for an ironworker.

Also, if you do not estimate the distance right, that would be another problem. So, always understand that depth perception is an important characteristic you ought to have if your ambition is to be an ironworker.

5. Hand-eye coordination

So, here is another. You need to have hand-eye coordination as well. This is also important for most of the things that you do in life. Just assume that you are driving a car. What would happen if you fail to have both your hands and eyes in the same situation? You would face an accident, right? So, it is very important to have hand-eye coordination in whatever you do in life. And it is vastly vital especially in the field of ironworking.

As you know, you would have to tie rebar together. And you should be able to do it pretty quickly. You can never waste your time. Your employer would not like that either. It is all about efficiency in work. You have to be efficient, both to work for the pay you receive and to have job satisfaction that you did it right. How can you be efficient if you do not have proper hand-eye coordination? Because of that, keep in mind that hand-eye coordination is something really important for the field of ironworking. However, if you feel that you do not coordinate your eyes and hands properly, this of course would not be a good profession for you.

6. Physical stamina

This is indeed a physical trait that you must possibly have for almost all occupations that require physical labor. What is physical stamina? Well, physical stamina is the ability and the physical fitness that allows you to engage in physical activities for long periods of time.

Of course, in ironworking, you cannot go and rest after working for a couple of hours. It is a persistent flow of work. In a worksite, you can be there doing nothing and chilling. You must engage in work. That is what you are paid for. If you do not do it right, you are of no use to the company of the employer that you work for.

If you have a higher level of physical stamina, you would not feel tired or exhausted even after long hours of work. You would still feel relaxed and comfortable.

Perhaps, you may have to work for the whole day most probably. This type of physical fitness level is necessary. If you do not have physical stamina, ironworking is not a good choice for you. Most other professions that require physical stamina would not suit you as well. So, you may have to choose a profession that requires mental labor instead.

7. Physical Strength

Why do ironworkers need physical strength? It is because they have to engage in a number of physical activities. In fact, ironworkers have to guide heavy beams. So, having physical power and strength is necessary. And they have to tighten bolts. That also requires physical strength.

Physical strength is the last on our list. This is also pretty important for all the professions that require human labor. And it is pretty important for iron working as well. Mainly, the people who need to engage in physical activities should have physical strength. Unquestionably, ironworkers must definitely have.
